At I/O this year, Google displayed its vision for a more conversational way of interacting with technology. From Home to Daydream, Google products, services take aim at its biggest rivals. Below are the 10 biggest announcements.
1. Google assistant
Google Assistant is an ongoing two-way dialogue
between you and Google that understands your world and helps you get things done. 10 years ago machine can translate just 2 languages, now over 100 languages can be translated, said Pichai.
Google Assistant will be better in the future and will work like a concierge service for you, too, Pichai added. In the future users will be able to converse with Google Assistant and not just ask one question.
2. Google Home
Google Home is a voice-activated product
that brings the Google assistant to any room in your house. Home is "like having a voice activated remote control to the real world, whenever you need it."
Google Home will take the best properties from Chromecast and use them in the house. It will also have the search function built-in, people can ask it any question. Google Home will be released later this year.
A new app launched at Google IO with features like stickers and whisper chat. Allo uses smart reply, which is a suggestive conversational response. It will use Google's computers
to predict how you want to respond, saving you typing.
It will also chat directly with Google to find information or navigate. In Google Allo one can search the web, watch YouTube videos and even play games. Google Assistant is embedded in app too.
Allo will compete with popular chat services such as Facebook's Messenger, which recently announced an artificial intelligence feature, and WhatsApp, also owned by Facebook and will be available on Android and iOS this summer.
It is a companion app for one-to-one video calling
. With Duo, the goal is to make video calling faster and more reliable, even on slower network speeds. It also introduced a feature called Knock Knock, which gives you a live video of the other caller before you answer. It will also be available on Android and iOS this summer.
5. Android N
Still not decided on the name, calling it Android N, the new Android OS has improved graphics, reduced battery consumption and storage and security enhancements.
It is more secure than before with media framework hardening, file based encryptions and seamless updates. Users can now quick switch to the previous app by double tapping the recent button in Android N. Multi-window mode comes to Android N, too. Split screen along with picture in picture modes are available. It brings more realistic emojis, skin tone variations and 72 new emojis
In total 250 new features will be available in the new Android N operating system and the beta version is now available.
It is a new platform for high quality mobile virtual reality
. Manufacturers including Samsung, HTC and Huawei having smartphones capable of handling it. New headsets and a controller will be available for Daydream VR.
Arriving this fall, it will also include Google's apps like YouTube, Street View, Play Movies, Google Photos and the Play Store.
7. Android Wear 2.0
Android Wear 2.0 has a revamped user experience
and standalone apps that run right on the watch, no matter where your phone is or even if it's off.
Users can now mix and match watch faces with various apps on any Android Wear ready smartwatch. A better keyboard is also available on the Android Wear smartwatch.
8. Android Instant Apps
With Android Instant Apps, users will be able to run any app with one tap
, no installation needed.
It is Google's answer to the pain of installing phone apps you know you'll use just once or twice, like for shopping. With this approach, the app runs on Google's servers instead of your phone. It also has compatibility all the way back to Jellybean OS
Google launched an expansion of Firebase at IO 2016. Going beyond a mobile backend, the platform helps developers quickly build high-quality apps, grow their user base, and earn more money across iOS, Android and the mobile web.
10. Studio 2.2
Google launched Android Studio 2.2 preview, the latest version of its integrated development environment(IDE). It has a new layout designer and a firebase plugin adding services like Analytics, Authentication, Notifications, and AdMob.
Studio 2.2 will be better for developers who are aiming emerging markets.
