Micromax has announced a strategic collaboration with MediaTek to increase 4G adoption in India, and has launched Canvas Fire 4G that will be the first smartphone to be powered by the 4G compliant MediaTek MT6735 processor. The smartphone’s price and market availability is still undisclosed.
Micromax Canvas Fire 4G will come with a 4.5-inch display, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of built-in storage with expandable storage support, and runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop OS. It features 5MP rear autofocus camera alongside a 2MP front-facing camera. The company claims that the handset will support download speed of up to 150Mbps and also sports dual front-facing speakers.
“We currently have four 4G devices, but we are looking at expanding this number rapidly. We will bring three 4G handsets this month (priced under $125) and before Diwali, we will have five more devices, priced well under $100,” Micromax CEO Vineet Taneja as per PTI. The company expects one-fourth of its smartphone sales volume to come from 4G devices by end of the year.
As per IDC April-June 2015 quarterly report, smartphone shipment grew 44% to 26.5 million unites from 18.4 million units a year ago. Samsung was the market leader with 23% share of the market followed by Micromax (11%) and Intex (11%).

As per Strategy Analytics’ prediction by 2017, India will grow its 4G LTE market and would overtake Japan to be the world’s 3rd largest 4G LTE market as well as surpass the US the same year, to be the world’s second largest smartphone market.
According to consulting firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byer’s 2015 “Internet Trends” report, nearly 65% of India’s current internet traffic comes from mobile devices. With the upcoming launch of 4G service by Reliance Jio in December, more smartphone manufacturers are expected to launch devices.
